Jill Sherrill Smith was born in 1948 in Kingston, Ontario. A cyclist since she was 9 years old when her engineering Father rebuilt a Raleigh touring bike for her, she rides everywhere. The Raleigh, a cadillac of bikes, had all the bells and whistles including a generator which powered a large headlight.
In 2015, Jill taught her last online class at Queen’s University. Previously, Ms Smith taught in Sociology, Sociology of Sport and in Women’s Studies at Queen’s, York and Trent Universities.
In March, 2014, Jill was diagnosed with Merkel Cell Carcinoma, stage 4. She went through cancer treatment in the summer of 2014. In 2016, she was back on her bicycle again and riding for Kids Cancer.
Today, Jill is retired. She lives in Yarmouth County, Nova Scotia, with her life partner, fisherman Ellie Norman Smith and her wonderful dog “Polly”anna.
