  • Greatest Accomplishments: Being here! I have had 3 close brushes with death in my lifetime, including most recently surviving a major heart attack that happened back on January 17, 2016 while playing hockey. Thankfully I didn’t just survive my heart attack, I am quite frankly thriving afterwards. Doctors are so amazed at how quickly I bounced back and with how I have recovered, I was sent to Toronto Sunnybrook Hospital for advanced testing and follow up. Proudly I can say that I have been given the “Green Light” to resume all activities as if the heart attack never happened!

CTCACF History: In 2004 I received an email from Jeff Rushton, the founder and passionate volunteer of the Coast to Coast Against Cancer Foundation inviting me to come an participate in Tour for Kids.  This was the  first year for the event, and truthfully had no idea what I was getting myself into. After hearing the personal stories of the children and their families afflicted by this terrible disease, I was hooked for life!! The physical suffering I endured that day, riding over 200 km was incredible, but it wasn’t CANCER! I have used that thought over and over again, to get me through a tough spot in a bike race, or on a difficult climb in the mountains of Europe. I am blessed to have my health, and to have a healthy and vibrant son. For that I will forever be grateful! I often tell people that the CTCACF family is like a something like a “cult”, because people that join can never truly leave!  Since that first ride in 2004, I have participated in all but 1 Tour for Kids, and in 2008 I was chosen to participate in the inaugural Sears National Kids Cancer ride, riding from Vancouver to Halifax in 19 days. Back then we rode 24/7 and had 3 teams on the road. A lot has changed since then, and with this year marking the 10th Anniversary, I new I had to come back to do it all again!

So this September, for 18 days and with 35 other cyclists and an even bigger crew, I will be embarking on my next big cycling challenge:  Riding across Canada from Vancouver to Halifax, to raise awareness and to raise the essential funds needed for research and to support programs for these children and their families.

Some facts about children and cancer that might surprise you:

  • Cancer is the leading cause of non-accidental death of children in Canada
  • over 10,000 children are living with some aspect of cancer or its long term effects
  • the good news is that childhood cancer survival rates have increased due to advanced
  • the sad news is that oftentimes, the treatment used to fight childhood cancers leave kids with long term and lifelong effects such as, but not limited to, secondary cancers, neurocognitive impairments and sterility
  • childhood cancer has devastating effects on families as well, including financial and emotional effects

IMAGINE that with your generous support we can create a WORLD BEYOND CHILDHOOD CANCER!  We can improve survival rates and the quality of life for all of the Canadian children who are living with and beyond cancer!!

Thank you in advance for your generous donation, for the many children and families serviced by the programs you will help fund. Together, and with your donations and support, we will improve the quality of life for children, and their families, living with and beyond cancer.
