Today April, our Team Leader, awoke us at 5:30am to Alberta Bound by Gordon Lightfoot. We were getting dressed in the semi when Rochelle started calling me Rosemary. Team 1 arrived late last evening so we were all here. The volunteers made up a full breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausages, fried potatoes and oatmeal, which we ate within a coral of vehicles. Once everything was packed up we shuttled up to Lake Louise for our start. We all gathered on the boardwalk for some pictures and our morning ride dedication. I was suddenly overcome by emotions as I realised the last time I was here was when I laid my Dad’s ashes to rest.
Today’s 202km ride took us north towards Jasper. After crossing the North Saskatchewan river, about half way, we stopped at The Crossing Inn for a great lunch and then headed east to Rocky Mountain House. Although we had 1728m of climbing there wasn’t as many steep climbs today, more just long steady inclines. The bonus was that we had almost 2200m of downhill as we started to come out of the mountains and into the foothills.
In Rocky Mountain House we stopped at a community center to shower up and have dinner, then we started a long shuttle to Edmonton, which got us in at midnight. The great staff at the Sears at Kingsway mall opened the store for us to use the bathrooms and then it was off to bed.
