National Kids Cancer Ride

Day 1- Official Start To NKCR 2017

Wow- What a day! Up bright and early at 5:30 am for breakfast and then out to the RV’s to White Rock BC. Talk about an emotional moment, setting up the bikes and then stepping out to the beach to pick up our rocks and leaving the one with a message for everyone to see and read on the shore. Mine said”NKCR 2017″ – yet when I set it down to take a photo it hit me that I am REALLY doing this. How am I able to be part of this amazing group of people all riding for Children to have a future without cancer? How am I lucky enough to be included in making a difference?

Well, that was it. The tears started and from there kept on going through our dedication from Patrick Sullivan who shared his story about his son Finn who lived to race around the kitchen with his yellow car and drift around corners. He is watching down on us now, but after hearing his story, the poem he wrote to share with the National Riders in 2010 and revisited that again today. He shared hi passion, he showed us Finn’ s Bravery Beads and reminded us that we want to get to a point where no child will need to get any “Bravery Beads”

We toasted to our journey, to the children and families who have braved through this horrible disease one treatment at a time, to the hero’s who watch over us from above and to those the many that are cheering us on from city to city. We ride because of all of them – because no parent deserves to hear the words “your child has cancer” – because as Patrick Sullivan says….. “We ride because we can and maybe they can because I ride”

From there we moved to our start , and headed off to Hope. Rough start with nerves , needing to figure out the gears nd how the whole group would gel but, we made it into Hope and had a wonderful meal. Now onto our rest stop in Kamloops to start our day tomorrow!
